Christmas at the Cabin, Part 1

This year for Christmas, we did something a little different....we went on vacation to Sunriver!

We've always stayed home for Christmas, and we love that. After all, there's no place like home for the holidays!.....unless you have a cozy cabin you can go to! We've been to this cabin in Sunriver twice already and have enjoyed every second there. We thought having a Christmas getaway to the cabin would be a marvelous idea, so we got to planning. We had the cabin booked for a year, allowing us the time to save and prepare for a Christmas away from home. Ohhhh how thankful I am that we were able to take this trip!

We arrived to the Cabin on Saturday the 22nd at about 4, check-in time. After unpacking and decorating a bit, we settled in for our annual dice game. This is where if you roll a double, you pick a wrapped gift. Once all the gifts are gone, everyone has a minute to try to roll more doubles to steal gifts. At the end, you get to open and keep the gifts you have. The gifts are just little, sometimes silly things, but we sure have a lot of fun with the game! We do it every Christmas Eve at Grandma Cathy's house, but decided we would do it early this year as it seemed like a great "hoorah!" event to our first day at the cabin.

That night we started a fire, watched a movie, snacked, and enjoyed our first lazy evening at the cabin.

Sunday the 23rd, we went out to breakfast! We made the short drive to Bend to eat at a Black Bear Diner. It was Timothy's job to pay, as he won the dice game gift of $ with instructions to pay for everyone's breakfast, including the tip. He got to keep the leftover cash, lucky him!

After breakfast, we headed back to Sunriver to walk around The Village. We checked out the shops, made our obligatory stop at Goody's for ice cream, then headed back to the cabin for some hang time.

It was so nice to feel relaxed and lazy! Nothing we had to do, nowhere we had to be! We listened to music, played games, took Daisy for a walk, Molly played her uke for us, we baked peanut butter blossom cookies for Santa, and watched Home Alone!

The kids were very excited to see they had the ice skating rink up and going and they were just begging us to go! So after our movie ended and we stuffed our faces with cookies and snacks, we headed to The Village for a little ice skating! Oh boy, those first steps out onto the ice are pretty treacherous! haha! Luckily we had little helpers to help us stay on our feet, and actually, the kids picked it up quite quickly! At the end, they had ditched the helpers and I was the one still using it! After a while, my feet, as well as Sam's, were killing us. We grabbed a snack and a drink and enjoyed watching the kids skate by themselves for awhile. Skating was definitely the highlight of the day for the kiddos and I hated to tell them it was time to go, but I was looking forward to putting my feet up in front of the fire!

That evening we enjoyed a nice roaring fire, lots of yummy snacks for dinner, the movies White Christmas and The Holiday Inn, and a dip in the hot tub!

Christmas Eve! On Monday, the 24th, we woke up to it snowing!! The kids were out of their minds excited to know we would actually have snow for Christmas! We wasted no time getting our gear on and heading to Mt Bachelor for some snow tubing! We had an absolute blast!! It was snowing pretty heavy when we got there, which made the kids even more excited. We were also the first ones to go down the hill! Tim was a little anxious at first, not wanting to go down a hill by himself, but after 3 runs with Mama and Papa, he was ready to take off by himself! We are so proud of him! The hill is steeper than it looks in photos, you seriously zoom down it! I love the pull system they have to hook you up and bring you to the top of the hill, definitely better than having to walk back up yourself! By the end of our two hour time slot, we were getting cold and ready to call it quits. The kids played in the snow for a bit as one last hoorah before leaving the mountain.

Back at the cabin, we warmed up and ate lunch. Sam and I took the opportunity to go walk around The Village by ourselves (because wouldn't you know it, Molly asked Santa for a watch for Christmas and we had no watch!...Way to leave it to the last minute to tell Santa what you want, Molly!), while the kids worked on their notes to Santa and watched Elf with Grandma Cathy. It started snowing again while Sam and I were out, and the kids were more than ready to head back outside to play in the snow when we returned. Snowmen were built, snowballs were thrown, and general merriment was had by all, lol!

As a Christmas gift to us, my dad sent money to pay for a festive meal out while on our vacation! We wanted to eat out for Christmas dinner, but we learned most of The Village was to be closed, including the restaurants. So we went out for Christmas Eve dinner instead! All decked out in our ugly Christmas sweaters, we had a delicious meal at the Village Bar and Grill! Anthony's mac and cheese was heavenly, and my Kobe beef sliders were out of this world. Thanks for the meal, Grandpa!

To be continued....

With love,
Mama Hauck
