Quarantine, Day 26. Bacteria Growth Finale!

Time to wrap up our bacteria growth project!

Anthony predicted, out of the 4 surfaces he chose, that the toilet swab sample would grow the most bacteria, but in fact it was the PS4 remote that did! The toilet did come in 2nd place though! Seeing the amount of growth from the PS4 remote is nauseating. It freaked the kids out, too. HA!

Molly predicted, out of the 4 surfaces she chose, that her tablet swab sample would grow the most bacteria, and she was right! Ohhh gosh, it is seriously nasty!

Timothy predicted, out of the 4 surfaces he chose, that the computer keyboard would grow the most bacteria, and he was also right! My word, are you sensing a theme? Freaken dirty electronics!

It was really interesting to compare all the surface samples. Look at all the different bacteria colors and shapes! The ones I thought would be the worse definitely were. Who thinks of or remembers to ever wipe down their home electronics? Well...I will now. And so will the kids. They were really grossed out and vowed to help and remember to wipe their electronics down daily after use.

Most importantly, those items wouldn't be so gross if hands were washed more frequently! The kids habitually wash their hands the second they come home from school, or after using the rest room....but do they when they blow their nose? Go out in the yard and play? Go to a friend's house and touch all their stuff? Go to the store? Etc. etc. Time to wash our hands more.

It was also cool to compare the hand samples. For each kiddo, one was kept as a control, the other we put 3 blotter papers with 3 different cleaners on them to see the affects on the bacteria. Today we lifted those blotter papers off to see the results. All 3, the iodine, purell hand sanitizer, and my homemade soap either lessened the growth, damaged the growth, or completely eradicated the bacteria growth it was placed upon. Sweet.

What a great lesson this was!!

Keep on keeping on!
