Watching Our Garden Grow

As usual, we got our garden up and running in May! We cleaned the beds of weeds, stirred them up, leveled them out, and planted all of our starts.

This year we got the majority of our starts from an organic farm in the Lyle, WA area. We usually get our starts from our friend Andy, but last year his wife passed away. He has since met someone new and has decided to stop farming. Thankfully we found the place in Lyle. We are very pleased with the quality of their starts and I love that they are organic!

It always feels so good getting the garden on its way!

Things are progressing very nicely! This year we are doing our usual bed of strawberries and raspberries, as well as broccoli, tomatoes (for Sam!), and snap peas. New this year is cauliflower. We've never grown cauliflower before, so we will see how that goes!

So far everything has taken off nicely! The raspberries are flowering. Every morning while I water I say hello to all the little bumble bees pollinating them for me. The strawberries and snap peas were also quick to flower and I already have a few delicious berries and snap peas starting! We took the rings off the tomato plants and they are doing wonderful. The broccoli and cauliflower are well on their way. It'll be nice because I have some at different growing stages, so I can stagger the harvest.

Not pictured, but something I'm excited about, are our fruit trees! Last year was the very first year we got NOTHING on any of our trees. Everything flowered, and then a frost came, and the bees never got a chance to pollinate anything. No pears, no apricots, no Japanese plums. It was the saddest thing. This year, all have flowered, all have been pollinated, and all have the startings of fruit! Hooray!

We are looking forward to watching our garden grow and reaping the rewards!

With love,                                                                                                               Mama Hauck
