July Horse Fun

A little over a month ago, I had plans to sell Ellie. Money is tight. Hay prices are through the roof. Ellie is a big horse....she consumes a lot. Ellie isn't personable. She listens well enough, but doesn't really want to spend any time with you. And she's pushy to Maizy. Which is a problem sometimes. Molly no longer takes horse lessons and has overall just lost interest in riding. No one ever wants to go spend any time with the horses, because there's a million other things to do or get done. And I can only give so much time myself because of.....life.

All these things suck. But it's also ok. Life happens. And Ellie is Ellie. Can't change her personality or anything.

So I made the decision. I took a bunch of photos and I wrote up an add for Ellie.

But then Molly had a friend over and they went out together and spent time with the horses and rode Ellie. Then a few days later we spent time at the barn again and we all took turns riding Ellie. Then yesterday Molly rode Ellie again, all over the property, and even down the road a bit. Ellie has been superb. A little overweight, a little resistant to "work," but superb nonetheless.

So then I began to have second thoughts. We would save money, yes. Our hay would last double the amount of time, yes. Those are the biggest pros. But the cons are plenty....Maizy would be alone. She would probably become more anxious, as well as depressed, if we didn't get her goat friends or something. We wouldn't have a bombproof horse that anyone could hop on at any time....because I'm still working with Maizy to get her to that point (and who knows if she'll ever get there...).

What to do....what to do!?

Long term, I'm still undecided if keeping Ellie is the right decision. But for now, I think we will just continue on. If collectively we all make more of an effort to be more motivated to spend more time down at the barn, then the cost is worth it. Though I do hope hay prices will come back down.

Anyway, here's some horsey fun photos! Because we do love the horses, and we do feel great when we do get down to the barn and spend time with the horses.

With love,
Mama Hauck
