The Year of the Bear

Anthony,

What an adventure this past year has been. Papa and I are so very proud of you and all your hard work!

In fact, this past year has been a lot of work for all of us. More work than I had anticipated. More work than I could keep up with. When we brought you to that very first meeting where Council was trying to get the community to step up and form Goldendale's Pack 551 again, I had no clue what was in store for us. No clue what we would sign up for in the name of getting the Pack up and running. No clue about all the time, money, sacrifices, sweat, and tears we would go through to make it all work for the community.

Yes, we have traveled a long and winding road this past year that hasn't always been the easiest, but ohhhhh the fun we have had!

From monthly Pack Meeting fun with Advancements, skits, and activities.....

....to special Pack events!

Like the 4th of July Parade......

The Primary School's yearly carnival.....

Working a donation sale......

The Primary School's Veteran's Day Assembly........

The Veteran's Day Parade.......

The Pinewood Derby Workshop, held at our house........

 The Pinewood Derby!.......

The Blue and Gold Banquet.........

And our beginning of summer Pack 551 pool party!

Along with events that involved the whole Pack, we participated in our own special events of just the Bear Den.

Like our Conservation project where we walked the streets of down town Goldendale and picked up all the trash we could find......

Our fun Christmas party where our Den got together to celebrate the holiday season and eat yummy food!....

Our trip to Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge where we went on a hike, observed nature, dissected owl pellets, did a wildlife scavenger hunt, and talked about plants, ecosystems, and the food chain......

And our Den Outing where we leaned how to pick a great spot for a tent, as well as set a tent up, tie a double half hitch, went on a 1 mile hike, performed a skit, and cooked a lunch of burgers, beans, watermelon, and smores!

Those were awesomely fun and special adventures that took weeks of planning, but nothing beats all the fun and learning that happened during the day-to day grind of our weekly Den meetings.

Some of which included learning proper etiquette of the American Flag and how to fold one......

Visiting with Sheriff Kallio where we learned about his job and had our finger prints taken.....

Making bird feeders with bagels, peanut butter, and bird seed.....

Learning all about composting and making our own mini compost cups......

Earning our whittling chip, badge, and belt loop by learning knife safety and whittling a bar of soap......

Making blessing bags that were given to Goldendale's Pregnancy Resource Center......

And much, MUCH more!!

Now you have officially completed the Bear Requirements and have earned your Bear Rank! Papa and I are so very proud of you and all the other boys in our Den. I am honored to have been your Bear Den Leader and seen you through this past year.

We are excited to watch you continue on in the Scouting Program as you work on your Webelos Rank, and I am sorry that I will not be following you into Webelos as your Den Leader as I had planned; but I will still be there every step of the way. Cheering you on. Helping you out. Watching you grow.

Ahh yes, the year of the Bear......what a jam-packed year of fun and learning we have had, Anthony. Way to go, Cub Scout! Keep up all the fantastic work.

With love,
Mama Hauck
